NEWS: Annual 'Winter's Gifts' orchestral-choral collaboration adds handbells this year
DESCRIPTION: Despite the weekend's deluge, the seventh annual "Winter's Gifts" holiday program was a sellout Sunday night at Mission Santa Clara. Folks have grown smitten with this inventive musical event, a collaboration of the San Jose Chamber Orchestra and the San Jose-based chorus known as the Choral Project, whose 40 voices caress the ears -- a sonic loving touch.

NEWS: S.J. Chamber Orchestra, Choral Project bring gift of Light

NEWS: An Eye-opening Show - Choral Project's Willingness To Take Chances Pays Off In Concert
DESCRIPTION: One mission of the 45-singer Choral Project is to engage audiences, as the South Bay group proved again Friday with its season opener at Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in San Jose. Those who like compelling performances of unfamiliar music could only commend the 18-piece program, which was repeated Saturday. Many of the devoted followers of the group Daniel Hughes founded in 1996 are singers who wish they had the time or talent to be in a group this good.

NEWS: The Rollercoaster Of War, Peace & Christmas
DESCRIPTION: The San Jose Chamber Orchestra and a vocal group called The Choral Project combined on “Winter Gifts: Peace,” presumably as a goal to be yearned for. This spotlighted the masterful English cantata “Dona Nobis Pacem” (1937) offering a seminal trans-Atlantic linkage of composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and poet Walt Whitman. The two never met, but still appeared to communicate superbly.

NEWS: ‘Songbird’ Oratorio Filled With Power
DESCRIPTION: Did you hear the one about the soap actor -- the guy who used to be on "General Hospital'' and "Another World'' -- who's starring in a Buddhist oratorio about an eagle and a songbird that save the world? Sounds like a joke, right? It's not. The actor is Jordan Charney and the oratorio (sort of) is ``The Songbird and the Eagle,'' which turns out to be a charming and beautifully scored new work by composer Kim D. Sherman and librettist Rick Davis. It had its world premiere performances over the weekend, courtesy of the San Jose Chamber Orchestra and the Choral Project, and I wish I could see it again.
